The $65 million Melbourne Sports and AquaticCentre (MSAC) is recognized as Australia’s largest sports and leisure complex.MSAC was the venue of choice for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, and caters for a range of international sports including swimming, diving, basketball, netball, table tennis, and squash.
According to MSAC’s IT Business Manager Henry Chung Yan, a point-to-point CCTV surveillance system had been installed at the venue prior to the 2006 Games. “Since that time we needed to expand the video surveillance system, however we wanted to integrate cameras that could offer us higher resolution that the current system. We selected the MOBOTIX IP cameras for this application.”
Taking advantage of the fact that the MOBOTIX cameras could be plugged directly into, and powered by, the existing network infrastructure with minimal load on the network, Mr Chung Yan said, “We were pleased that these particular megapixel cameras required minimal resources, both over the network and on the server side. When we tested the system we observed the bandwidth usage was a lot less than expected, and the server spec requirement was quite low, as the cameras don’t seem to need a lot of processing power. All the cameras are powered using power over ethernet as well, which was a saving on the installation time.”
Currently MOBOTIX dual-lens cameras are being used to monitor the venue’s main entrance and foyer areas. With the number of visitors often exceeding 4500 people a day; wide angle viewing along with clear facial identification for crowd monitoring was a requirement.
“We also have some megapixel cameras installed in the car park area so that staff can keep an eye on traffic flow and also maintain a level of car park security. The megapixel cameras enable us to digitally zoom and obtain clear images of license place for positive ID”, said Chang Yan.

Melbourne security company ADACS Systems installed the MOBOTIX camera system. ADACS managing director, Kevin Hanlon said that he had recommended MOBOTIX to MSAC as he believed this was the right solution for a public venue of this size, “We are talking about a 36,000 square metre complex on a 6 hectare site that caters to a large number of patrons, so there is duty of care to both to the staff and the customer. On a large scale you have personal property and venue cash handling to secure, crowd and traffic flow monitoring requirements, health and safety standards to maintain." Mr Hanlon explained that they had deployed MOBOTIX D12 megapixel dome cameras, which provide one hundred and eighty degrees coverage delivers usable, high resolution footage that cover some of the larger areas that specifically need monitoring. "We also installed some M12 dual lens cameras in the car park, that keep watch over the car park entrances and member area. The system provides us with detailed images of the car license plates as they enter and leave the car park, which is useful for incidents such as property damage or vehicle theft."
